What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast as a result of an abnormal increase in the fat and glandular tissue. It is quite common affecting an estimated 40 - 60% of men in varying degrees, often becoming bothersome from adolescence and onward. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, surgery to reduce the breast tissue can help greatly.
In some patients for whom the unwanted development of breasts results from obesity, excess skin and breast tissue can be reduced through a healthy diet and regular exercise. However, in most cases, male breast reduction surgery is needed to remove the extra breast tissue.
Dr. Fielding has a special interest and expertise in this area. He offers highly professional male chest surgery services (Gynecomastia), with extensive training and experience having performed over 2000 procedures, and has presented papers on the procedure to other Plastic Surgeons. Gynecomastia surgery can create a more masculine, muscular, and attractive appearance while restoring a healthy sense of self-confidence. Many of Dr. Fielding's patients have found gynecomastia surgery to be a life changing experience.
This surgery is usually performed under a general anesthetic, but some men may be suitable for local anesthetic (awake) surgery depending on a number of issues including anatomical and personal. It usually leaves a very small scar below the pec major muscle if liposuction is performed, and another going one quarter of the way around the areola for excision of the gland. Men wear a compression garment for three weeks or more after the surgery to reduce swelling, and dissolving sutures are used, so post-operative care is simple. Normal exercise can be resumed three weeks after surgery, but it is important to know that the final result of this surgery is not seen for up to a year as swelling settles.
You will want someone experienced, professional and adept to perform the procedure. Dr. Fielding has received and earned many certifications and accolades over his years as a plastic surgeon; and would be more than happy answer any questions or inquries you may have regarding your procedure.
